Sidewalks reduce pedestrian crashes, increase pedestrian activity, and are key to creating walkable communities. Cary has been designated as a National Walk-Friendly Community. We receive sidewalk requests from residents like you, the Cary Police Department, Wake County Public School System, HOAs and staff. Each year, Cary ranks 30+ sidewalk projects and funds the top ranking projects.

Building a Sidewalk

With over 20+ sidewalks in various stages of design, easement acquisition and construction, building a sidewalk takes approximately two to three years.

Surveying & Design

Approximately 12 months

To efficiently allocate staff and funds, sidewalk projects are often grouped together as they move through this process.

A survey is prepared to understand the existing conditions and topography of the corridor. Design engineers then prepare detailed plans for the sidewalk. The design must meet ADA, Town, and state requirements. Plans also identify and estimate the quantity of construction materials.

Easements & Utility Location

Approximately 12 months

During design, Cary also begins coordination with property owners. Staff will discuss the design and acquire any easements needed to construct the sidewalk.

Utilities are frequently buried adjacent to the street and may need to be relocated. Coordination with utility companies to relocate telecommunication or power lines can be a lengthy process.

Construction

6-12 months

Once the design is complete, easements are acquired and the utilities relocated, and Cary bids the project and selects a construction firm. Construction timelines vary based on the number of sidewalk projects included in the bid.

Staff oversees contract requirements, tests for quality, works with adjacent property owners, observes work zone safety, and oversees coordination with the state if needed.
