In its 4th year, Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival celebrates the lives and experiences of immigrants and refugees who left their land of birth and moved to a new country and we love to showcase their work. This year, we have 15 short films and two film blocks. Each block will include Q&A with the filmmakers and community members.
A Journey through Angel Island, Director Felicia Lowe: Animated video introducing youngsters to Angel Island Immigration Station, dubbed the “Ellis Island of the West.”
Good Times Coming, Director Tony Asimakopoulos: During Easter weekend in an immigrant neighborhood, a middle-aged man prepares to tell his aging mother that a dream has ended.
My Mother’s Hands, Director Emily Prins: When a Vietnamese indigenous mother immigrated with her family to the US, she was challenged with surviving a new country while balancing family.
Amma’s Ashes, Director Gaya Thirchy: Kaveri has three days to solve a family mystery and fulfill her mother’s last wishes, but her genderqueer teen is on a journey of their own.
La Guagua 47, Director Pedro Escarcega: La Guagua 47 (the 47 Bus) was inspired by an unforgettable experience Puerto Rican Producer & Creative Director Alba Martinez had in 1985 when she arrived in Philadelphia. The film tells the story of a young lost and alone recent migrant.
Uprooted: An Afghan Evacuee Story, Director Samaritan’s Purse: First-hand account of an Afghan evacuee uprooted from the life she knew and forced to flee to safety.
Leaving, Director Kellen Smith: Leaving follows a day in the life of two disabled refugee women who fled the war torn DR of Congo. Navigating their new home of Durham, NC, they reminisce about their homes and journeys.

Sherpa of Queens, Director Kirit Singh: Sherpa recalls his life from his home country of Nepal compared to his current life in New York City.
Conversations with My Self, Director Sabina Shanti Kariat: Karagöz puppetry is a traditional Turkish type of shadow puppetry that dates back to the Ottoman empire.
Children of the Labyrinth, Director Philip Brink, Marieke van der Velden: This film presents the letters that refugee Greek parents have written to their children. Read aloud, they emotionally recount their journeys and helplessness of being caught up in the labyrinth of the European asylum policy, and their love for their child.
Vagabond, Director JC Andreu: Vincent is a French international student coming to the US for his studies. As his plane lands, he panics, fearing to have lost his passport.
Pretty Eyes, Director Diego Alejandro Barajas: This video is a visual reinterpretation of American imagery with an Andean perspective.
Inveigled, Director Poorya Parvini: Akram, enclosed in the cocoon of his destiny, has witnessed painful endings and sad transitions.
Ukraine NIght at the Durham Bulls, Director Rob Underhill: Ukrainian nationals, relatives and supporters celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day with the Durham Bulls on 8/24/2022. They discuss the importance of coming together locally and globally in support of Ukraine.
