Cary takes great pride in its history and all of its historic and cultural resources. As a way to build upon this passion, Cary, with the help of the community, created the Historic Preservation Master Plan. The HPMP, created in 2010, helped to initiate Cary's own Historic Preservation Commission, lead to the adoption of the Cary Historic Design Guidelines, aided in Cary being designated as a Certified Local Government through the NC Historic Preservation Office, and started the local landmark program as means of protecting and promoting places of historic significance.
The preservation staff is responsible for overseeing projects that involve local, state, and federal historic preservation laws and regulations as they relate to private and public properties in Cary. In addition, staff provides technical historic preservation assistance, assists in the identification and evaluation of historic properties, provides public outreach materials and events to raise awareness of Cary's historic resources, and serves as the staff liaison to the Historic Preservation Commission.
Cary recognizes the value of preserving the town's rich history for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations. The Town supports local historic preservation by designating properties recognized as important historic resources worthy of preservation as Cary Historic Landmarks. Cary is also home to three National Register Districts and three individually-listed National Register Properties, designations made at the federal level.
