Current Job Opportunities
The Human Resources Department manages the recruitment and selection of applicants for full-time, part-time, seasonal and temporary staff vacancies. Job opportunities for which we are recruiting are posted regularly as they open; view available positions and apply for those of interest to you. Current Town employees may also review the internal job opportunities postings. You may also express interest in jobs by category by submitting a job interest card online and you will be notified via email when those kinds of positions open for application.
To ensure consideration, completed applications must be submitted online to the Human Resources department by the stated closing time and date posted. When the stated closing date is “continuous,” apply immediately; the position may close without notice. For most positions, the closing date is normally set two weeks after the posting appears online.
You will receive an immediate email confirming receipt of your submitted application. If you do not receive this email, contact customer service at (855) 524-5627 between 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday (EST).
Resumes alone do not qualify as applications, but may be attached to a completed online application. Attachments that supplement your resume or qualifications are accepted. Some positions require applicants to answer additional supplemental questions before the application is considered complete. If so, click the Supplemental Application tab to locate these questions.
The hiring department normally contacts applicants for interviews approximately two to four weeks after the recruitment closing date. For jobs that indicate “continuous,” applicants are screened for possible referral to the hiring department in the order in which their application is submitted.
Completing an Online Application
The Town of Cary only accepts online applications; no paper applications are available. Resumes may not be submitted in lieu of your online application. For those persons not having access to a computer, the Human Resources department offers a workstation that may be used between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday (with the exception of Town holidays.)
We accept applications only for positions for which we are actively recruiting. To ensure consideration, completed applications must be submitted online to the Human Resources Department by the stated closing time and date posted. When the stated closing date is “continuous,” apply immediately; the position may close without notice. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an immediate email confirming receipt. If you do not receive this email, contact customer service at (855) 524-5627 between 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday (EST).
When completing your application, be aware that providing false or misleading information or documentation or concealing requested information to gain employment may result in your application being disqualified or in your dismissal, if employed.
Screening, Referral and Employment
In considering your candidacy, your education, experience, skills, work record and availability will be evaluated in relation to job requirements. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applications will be referred to the hiring department. Due to the response to our recruitment efforts, not all applicants receive interviews. The hiring department will contact those applicants in whom they are interested to discuss the vacancy further or to arrange a personal interview.
Application Status/Notifications
Applicants receive email notification of their individual status updates as the recruitment progresses. All applicants are notified via email once the position is filled.Authorized Positions
The Town of Cary continually recruits for full-time, part-time, regular and temporary positions. See a list of full-time and part-time authorized positions for the current budget year.
Temporary Employment
Temporary and/or part-time employment opportunities are posted online. Temporary, part-time employees are not eligible for benefits.
Job Interest Card
Submitting a Job Interest Card will automatically send you job openings based on your interests as they are posted. For the next 12 months you will get notifications each time a position opens that matches your interests. We'll also send you a reminder email in 11 months to extend your notifications for another year.
Job Classification and Pay
Positions with similar duties and responsibilities are assigned the same job classification, salary grade and range. Starting salaries are based on the selected applicant's relevant training and experience, labor-market considerations, internal salary equity and the availability of funds.
Pay Ranges

The Town of Cary is dedicated to equality of opportunity. Accordingly, we do not practice or condone discrimination, in any form, against employees or applicants on the grounds of race, creed, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, pregnancy, political affiliation or mental or physical abilities except where physical or mental abilities, sex, or age are legitimate occupational qualifications. We are subject to, and comply with, the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Identity and Employability
If employed, you must submit proof of identity and eligibility for legal employment by your third day of work. Contact the Human Resources Department for a complete list of acceptable documents (examples of the most commonly used documents include a valid driver's license, a social security card and/or an original birth certificate).
If you are applying for a position designated as High Risk/Safety Sensitive (HRSS), you will be asked to submit to drug testing prior to being offered employment. Employees already employed by the Town currently in an HRSS position will not be required to submit to drug testing to obtain a transfer or promotion. Certain positions require physicals paid for by the Town. These physicals will only be scheduled after a job offer has been extended. Employment is contingent upon a positive recommendation from our physician.
Overtime Compensation Agreement
For employees subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), we generally allow the employee to choose between time off or pay for overtime worked. Either is subject to supervisory approval, however, and may be affected by budgetary constraints.
Probationary Period
Most new employees are subject to a probationary period of at least 12 months. If performance and conduct meet acceptable standards, a regular appointment is given. If not, employment may be terminated any time during the period. Police officers and firefighters serve at least a 12-month probationary period.
