On March 24, 2021, the Cary Police Department received a call reporting an assault on the White Oak Creek Greenway. The caller stated that a man jogging on the trail had run past her family several times, yelling at them and throwing things. She also stated that he spat at another person on the trail. Police responded to the greenway and spoke with the victims, and subsequently tried to locate the unidentified jogger, however he was not found. 

Local news media reported on the greenway incident following posts on social media by the caller and others. The posts not only included a video and photo of the jogger but also questioned whether the assault was racially motivated. The caller and her family are Chinese; the other victim is Iranian. The jogger is White.
