Intersection Improvements Project- April 2024 update
FY2020
Project Overview
On October 8, 2019, Cary citizens approved moving forward with several transportation and parks related projects as part of the 2019 Shaping Cary’s Tomorrow 2019 Bond Referendum including $5M for our Intersection Improvement Program.
The purpose of this program is to identify and help address intersections that experience higher levels of congestion or safety related concerns. Potential improvements could include turn lane improvements as well as upgrades to pedestrian signals, crosswalks and ramps.
Staff has identified several intersections to be included in the FY2020 Intersection Improvements Project and we are moving forward to implement associated operational and safety improvements.
The intersection locations are listed below:
- Walnut Street and South Walker Street - Completed 2024
- A new traffic signal, complimenting the signal at South Walker Street at East Chatham Street, has been installed. This signal improves pedestrian access while helping to support downtown development including the new library, retail and residential development wrapping the parking deck and the Downtown Park Project. - Walnut Street and Kildaire Farm Road - Completed 2024
- This signalized intersection is adjacent to Cary Elementary School and proposed improvements primarily focus on widening Kildaire Farm Road between Byrum Street and Walnut Street. Widening Kildaire Farm Road will eliminate the skew as Kildaire Farm Road crosses Walnut Street while also providing opportunity for a landscaped median. - NC 55 and High House Road - Bidding 2026
- This is a major intersection in western Cary with proposed improvements including an additional left turn lane to support traffic traveling westbound on High House Road and turning southbound onto NC 55. Refuge islands are also proposed for the northeast and southwest quadrants to shorten pedestrian crossing distances. Design efforts in coordination with NCDOT are ongoing. Image
- Tryon Road and Walnut Street (pedestrian improvements) - Bidding Summer/Fall 2024
- This is a major intersection in southeast Cary with proposed improvements focused around improving pedestrian access. Refuge islands are proposed at all four quadrants to reduce pedestrian exposure to vehicular traffic and shorten crosswalk lengths. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid 2024 and is anticipated to be complete in Spring of 2025. Image
- Tryon Road and Kildaire Farm Road (pedestrian improvements) - Bidding Summer/Fall 2024
- This is a major intersection in south Cary near the Western Wake Medical Center. Proposed improvements focus around improving pedestrian access including installation of a refuge island in the northeast quadrant and realigning crosswalks to shorten lengths. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid 2024 and anticipated to be complete during Spring 2025. Image
- Weston Parkway and Evans Road (pedestrian improvements) - Bidding Summer/Fall 2024
- This is a signalized intersection located in northwest Cary. Proposed improvements focus around improving pedestrian access including adding crosswalks and pedestrian signals to the northwest and southwest quadrants. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid 2024 and anticipated to be complete during Spring 2025. Image
