Why was the Transportation Working Group formed by Council?

In an effort to actively engage residents in focused conversations surrounding transportation-related issues, Council authorized the formation of a Transportation Working Group (TWG). The Group is intended to create an atmosphere where residents and Cary staff can think collaboratively together to advance trending transportation initiatives and make transportation and mobility better in our community.

Transportation Working Group members are selected by Cary staff. Members are selected based on expertise and experience, with the goals of (1) having a diversity of perspectives to optimize dialogue and collaboration, and (2) including residents who are passionate about our community and advancing transportation endeavors and initiatives. The Working Group includes a group of ten (10) residents, a Council Liaison (Lori Bush), and a student representative appointed by the Teen Council

Purpose

The Transportation Working Group was formed to assist staff with transportation-related issues

including but not limited to pedestrians, bicycles, vehicles, and transit.  Topics and policies are centered around four themes – advocacy, planning, policy, and emerging technology. These themes are described further as follows:

Advocacy: Public support for transportation programs, projects, and policy recommendations by educating the community through outreach.

Planning: Collaboration with staff to develop a vision and action plan for transportation implementation. Includes comprehensive planning, regional engagement, major transit service delivery, special studies, capital programming, pedestrian and cycling issues, and standard specification and details.

Policy: Support the advancement of policies related to transportation and mobility.

Emerging: Keep abreast on the latest trends in transportation, innovation, and technology and how trends can apply to our community.
