On June 3, 2020, Cary Mayor Weinbrecht signed the national initiative Reimaging Policing pledge (formally President Obama's Police Reform Pledge) related to police use of force.

Cary is joining communities across the nation in taking four specific actions:

  1. We will REVIEW our police department’s use of force policies.
  2. We will ENGAGE a diverse segment of our community in our review.
  3. We will REPORT the findings of our review to the community and ask for feedback.
  4. We will institute REFORMS as needed.

Current Status

Spring 2022: Project work is currently paused out of respect for the current search for a new Police Chief. The project is expected to resume in late 2022.

The internal work team consists of employees from several departments, including the Police Department, and is complemented by Inga Kennedy of Planners for Environmental Quality to assist with the external communications and community engagement efforts associated with the Pledge. Kennedy and her team specialize in effective outreach with minority communities.

Cary Police Department

The nationally accredited Cary Police Department partners with the community to protect life and property via geographic policing districts to help ensure Cary remains one of the nation’s safest cities. Services includes Police Records, Traffic Safety and School Resource Officer teams as well as a Criminal/Juvenile Investigations Division. The agency operates the Emergency Communications Center (911); provides Animal Control services; and leads Project PHOENIX (Promoting Healthy Occupancy through Education, Networking and Information exchange).
