Recognizing the importance of supporting residents in need, the Cary Town Council voted unanimously at its March 14 meeting to establish a new housing program, Stable Homes Cary. The program aims to keep people in their homes when possible and identify a path forward when relocation is necessary due to redevelopment. Cary-based Dorcas Ministries will serve as the lead nonprofit agency, partnering with additional local organizations to provide referrals and specialized services. Council committed $2.45 million over the next three years to establish Stable Homes Cary, increase Dorcas’s case management capacity, and support Dorcas’s administration of the existing Oasis Utility Bill and Play It Forward programs.

Cary issued 59 new detached residential and townhouse permits in the third quarter. The top three permitted subdivisions were Courtyards at Lochmere (29), Young Farm (12), and Preston Ridge (8). Overall, permits for new detached and townhouses increased by three permits, or 5%, compared to the same period of FY 2023.

In addition, 110 detached and townhouse certificates of occupancy (COs) were issued this quarter, an average of 1.7 certificates per workday. This is fewer than the 160 COs issued in the same period last year. The subdivisions receiving the most COs were Courtyards at West Cary (51), Abberly Alston (30), Estates at Weddington (6), and Young Farm (6). 

Cary did not issue any building permits for new multifamily units this quarter.
