Project Background

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a civil rights statute that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. There are five separate Titles (or sections) of the Act relating to different aspects of potential discrimination. Title II specifically addresses the subject of making public services accessible to those with disabilities.

Project Scope

The Town of Cary strives to assure that Town services and programs are accessible. A majority of the Town facilities have been designed, built, and renovated to comply with federal and state accessibility code requirements. However, since some facilities may have barriers that could limit full accessibility, an accessibility consultant was hired in June 2015 to develop the Town's ADA Transition Plan which has guided staff efforts to remove identified barriers from various facilities.

The Town of Cary plans to update the transition plan in 2022 to confirm efforts are in line with the ADA Transition Plan's intent.

Schedule

  • Facility Audits: Summer 2015 through Spring 2016 (Completed Spring 2016)
  • Open House Public Meeting: Monday, April 25, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Maple Room, Bond Park Community Center.
  • Town ADA Transition Plan Completion: Fall 2016 (Completed Fall 2016)
  • RFQ - ADA Transition Plan Update: Summer 2022

The Cary ADA Transition Plan contains a checklist for each facility, park, and greenway. Each checklist identifies each barrier and recommends a resolution for its removal. Any of the facility, park, and greenway checklists are available upon request.

Budget

The final consultant fee to develop Cary's ADA Transition Plan was $106,280. From 2016 to present, over $1.5M dollars has been spent in design and construction costs to remove accessible barriers from Town facilities. These costs are budgeted annually in the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan.
