Current Status

Fall 2024 Update: Surveying of the property is complete but project has been paused.

Project Background

The Batchelor Branch Greenway will connect key destinations including Thomas Brooks Park, Duke Health, Green Level High School, the Green Level Historic District, and numerous neighborhoods. A tunnel under NC 540 for the Batchelor Branch Greenway was constructed when NCDOT built the highway. NC 540 is most commonly a barrier to cyclists and pedestrians. The Batchelor Branch greenway and the tunnel which currently exists under NC 540 would connect residential, recreational, and commercial areas on either side of the highway.

Project Overview

Extending the greenway west just over a mile into Brooks Park would be a high priority. Cary currently owns most of the property or has easements for this extension. Then the greenway could head south to ultimately connect up to the White Oak Creek Greenway. Cary again owns most of the property or has easements for this additional one-mile of trail.

The trail will parallel the Batchelor Branch stream and will have to cross it three times. Along this stream is a floodplain that we want to protect so bridges or culverts will be needed to cross the stream.

Public Engagement

Cary has a well-documented history of robust public engagement. We anticipate having public input to receive feedback and once that is identified will notify the public.
