Project Background
Cary contracted with WithersRavenel to conduct a preliminary engineering study on alternatives to link Crabtree Creek Greenway with Weston Trail, crossing over Weston Parkway. The study was completed and included the following alternatives:
- Pedestrian tunnel
- Sidewalks up to Norwell (crosswalk at signal light)
- At-grade crossing HAWK pedestrian signal
Due to the safety concerns at this crossing point, the pedestrian tunnel was the selected alternative. The sidewalks up to Norwell Boulevard and the At-grade Hawk pedestrian signal will not be constructed with this project.
Project Overview
This project will construct Pedestrian Tunnel crossing of Weston Parkway and will complete a 1000’ greenway gap between the Weston HOA trail system and the Crabtree Creek Greenway. Currently the Weston HOA Trail system ends on the south side of Weston Parkway.
This greenway completion will improve connectivity between numerous residential developments, areas of employment, parks, and greenways.
Work on this project has been accelerated due to Cary successfully securing Locally Administered Projects Program (LAPP) funding in late 2021. LAPP is a competitive funding program managed by NC Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) that Cary routinely participates in to help leverage funding for eligible projects. The Town of Cary is covering the design fees and LAPP funding will cover the construction cost for this project.
