Current Status
Summer/Fall 2024 Update: Project currently on hold as we determine next steps.
Spring 2024 Update: Currently, surveying of the property is underway.
Project Background
Cary has an outstanding Cross Country Course at WakeMed Soccer Park. However, we knew that at some point, Trinity Road would be extended through the start-finish area of the existing course and that the course would have to be modified or relocated.
Cary has been exploring other properties that we own and has identified Thomas E. Brooks Park as a location to relocate the course. The goal would be to still host state-wide and regional events along with allowing the average citizen looking for a place to run or walk on a soft surface trail to use.
A 2K course could remain at WakeMed Soccer Park but would require utilizing some sidewalks to make the connection.
Project Overview
The proposed course will be located on approximately 100 acres between the USA Baseball facility and the softball complex. As with all cross-country courses, the biggest challenge is identifying an area for the start-finish line as a minimum of 400 meters is needed before it narrows down and turns. The typical width of the overall trail is expected to be about 25’ feet wide and similar to the existing trail at WakeMed Soccer Park utilizing granite screenings. We are looking to utilize existing cleared sewer corridors and powerline corridors where feasible to protect mature vegetation. This should allow for a partially shaded course.Public Engagement
Cary has a well-documented history of robust public engagement. We anticipate having public input to receive feedback, and once that is identified, we will notify the public.Contact
