Project Background

The Higgins Greenway Trail area includes vegetation and landscapes that act as a riparian buffer that helps protect water quality in the Swift Creek watershed. This invasive plant removal project is part of ongoing environmental work at this site that first began in 2012 when Cary performed a vegetation installation of native trees as part of the stream restoration project. In support of the long-term health of this valuable ecosystem, staff experts have created a plan to remove nonnative invasive plant material from this portion of our urban forest.

Project Overview

The Higgins Greenway Invasive Plant Removal project is part of Cary’s overarching commitment to healthy waterways and ecosystems in our urban landscapes. Through comprehensive and innovative stormwater management projects such as this one, Cary is committed to building a sustainable and resilient future. To perform the invasive plant removal tactics associated with this project, segments of the Higgins Greenway Trail will be shut down to the public. All work will be performed in coordination with internal staff experts and external specialized contractors. To learn more about how you can support native plants, pollinators, songbirds, and healthy wildlife areas in your own lawn and gardens visit our Cary Garden for Wildlife page.
