Project Overview
On October 8, 2019, Cary citizens approved moving forward with several transportation and parks related projects as part of the 2019 Shaping Cary’s Tomorrow 2019 Bond Referendum including $4.8M to complete a sidewalk gap along NW Cary Parkway (project area map).
This project is adjacent to North Cary Park and will complete a 650’ sidewalk gap along NW Cary Parkway where the roadway crosses over Black Creek Greenway. There is no sidewalk on either side of the road at this point, and no shoulder on the roadway bridge to accommodate pedestrians.
This sidewalk completion will improve connectivity between numerous residential developments, areas of employment, parks, and greenways.
Work on this project has been accelerated due to Cary successfully securing Locally Administered Projects Program (LAPP) funding in late 2020. LAPP is a competitive funding program managed by NC Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) that Cary routinely participates in to help leverage funding for eligible projects. LAPP funding will cover nearly half of the construction cost for this project.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are there closures / detours anticipated for Cary Parkway and Black Creek Greenway associated with this project?
A: Yes, preliminary plans include closing Cary Parkway for up to a week while the pedestrian bridge is installed by crane. Partial closures allowing one way traffic are also anticipated for several months to support associated construction activities including foundation construction, utility relocations and sidewalk construction.
A: Yes, both projects are currently on track to begin construction in late 2022 and coordinating project elements including pedestrian detours, construction phasing and access are being developed to help minimize impacts to our transportation system while hopefully benefiting from economies of scale.
A: Cary is actively working to install a traffic signal including pedestrian accommodations at the Norwell Blvd and Cary Parkway intersection. In addition, Cary is working to add sidewalk along NW Cary Parkway connecting SilverRock Ct. and SilverRidge Ct.
Q: When will the road be widened to four lanes like the rest of Cary Parkway?
A: Current regional traffic models support widening Cary Parkway between Evans Road and Harrison Avenue around 2040.
Q: Will widening Cary Parkway impact the proposed pedestrian bridge?
A: No – Cary Parkway will be widened to the south side of the existing roadway and the pedestrian bridge is proposed on the north side of the roadway (same side as North Cary Park).
