Request a Sidewalk

Program Background

Each year the Town Council establishes a priority list of locations for annual sidewalk projects that have been requested by citizens and the Police Department. The annual sidewalk priority list considers a number of factors including safety, use, need and feasibility. For more information, view the Town of Cary Sidewalk Project List or the Town's Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan.

FAQs

Learn more about the Sidewalk Request Program.  Here are the frequently asked questions asked by residents.

Request a Sidewalk

Request a sidewalk via Cary's 311 Request service. We'll contact you to confirm the details of your project or let you know if a petition is needed.
  • Go to 311 Request or call 3-1-1 to request a sidewalk.
  • Under Request Type, select Sidewalks & Streets
  • Using the Description field, describe the limits.  Our staff should be able to find the location based on the information you provide.
  • On the Map, drop the pin at the desired location for the sidewalk.
  • Under Preferred Contact Information, provide your contact information.  If your sidewalk request is located on a residential street a petition will be required. Staff will provide the maps and petition form.

Thoroughfares and Collectors - Anyone can request a sidewalk on a thoroughfare or collector, and this project will be added into the program for ranking.

Residential Streets - Requesting a sidewalk on a residential street requires a little more leg-work.  A petition signed by at least 70 percent of homeowners within the "area of influence" as noted in the Sidewalk Requests (Town's Policy Statement No.135) will be required. The Transportation Department will provide a map and addresses for the area of influence.
