Project Background
The towns of Apex and Cary collaborated to improve Lake Pine Drive from east of Pine Plaza Drive/MacGregor Plaza Drive to the Apex/Cary town limits (northeast of Versailles Drive). The corridor crosses Williams Creek and runs adjacent to land, that is part of Apex Community Park. The project widened from two-lanes to a three-lane section similar to Lake Pine Drive on the Cary side and tie-in to the wider section southwest of the park in Apex. The project also included sidewalks on the west side of the road near the park, a 10-foot street-side trail on the east side as part of Cary’s greenway system, and a high-visibility crosswalk at Versailles Drive. The design and construction of the project was funded through a cost-sharing program between the towns of Apex and Cary and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO). A total of $2,133,827 in STP-DA (federal funds) plus $200,000 in state funds was awarded to the Towns for the project through the CAMPO Locally Administered Project Program (LAPP).
