Project Overview

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is coming to our region! Planning is underway for fast, reliable, frequent service along four key corridors in Wake County, with full service anticipated by 2030.  The Wake BRT: Western Corridor will connect downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary at the future Multi-Modal Center along a 12-mile route with 20 stations, 6 of which are planned for Cary.

The preliminary design phase (0 to 30 percent) for the Western Corridor is underway. The final location and number of BRT stations along the corridor, which will include both mixed traffic and dedicated transit lanes, will be determined during this preliminary design phase. As of Summer 2022, the Western Corridor project has reached the 25% design milestone.

Project Background

In November of 2016, Wake County voters approved a plan for focused investment in public transit which put the implementation of the Wake Transit Plan in motion. The plan calls for building approximately 20 miles of transit lanes along four BRT corridors within Wake County.

BRT is a high-capacity bus-based transit system that delivers frequent and efficient service.  It may include dedicated lanes, busways, traffic signal priority, off-board fare collection, elevated platforms, and enhanced stations.

The City of Raleigh was selected as the project sponsor to lead project implementation for all four BRT Corridors. The City has partnered with the Town of Cary for implementation of the Western Corridor.

Imagine Cary

The Imagine Cary Community Plan envisions more walkable neighborhoods with connections to transit and other amenities in the Downtown and Eastern Cary Gateway Special Planning Areas.

Incorporating BRT into existing transit networks provides people with more travel options, gets people where they need to be more quickly and takes more cars off the road, which further supports Cary’s efforts in building a more sustainable future.

 Cary Station Area Planning

Together with our partners in Raleigh, we received a federal grant to enhance access and mobility around the proposed station areas. In Cary, that work will focus on the six identified locations shown here. We will look at first mile and last mile connections and other opportunities for transit-supportive development.
