The Town annually and proactively replaces water mains whose age and condition make them vulnerable to unexpected service interruptions and costly repairs. The water main replacement project locations are shown in the map below and listed beneath. The water mains on these streets will be upgraded to ductile iron pipes designed to the current Town of Cary standards in order to continue providing high-quality water service to these areas.

The project involves replacing the water main along Sycamore Street, Red Bud Court, King Street, Linda Court, and Boyd Street. It also includes new water connections between existing water mains at Downing Glenn Drive, Midland Valley Way, and Elmhaven Way. The project will replace water services along a portion of SW Maynard Road and the sewer main in Union Street south of Ann Street will be rehabilitated.

Project Award: The project has been awarded to J.F. Wilkerson Construction Co.

Schedule

Project construction began on June 10, 2024. Work in your neighborhood/street will begin based on the contractor's schedule. Please see below for a schedule breakdown of each work area included in this year's project:

• Oakwood Heights:  This project will compliment the watermain replacement work recently completed in Howland Avenue by replacing the remaining watermain still in need of renewal within the Oakwood Heights neighborhood. The streets where the water main is to be replaced include Sycamore Street, Red Bud Court, King Road and Linda Court. Work in Oakwood Heights began on King Road on October 3rd, 2024.  Work in the Oakwood Heights neighborhood is expected to run through March 2025.
• Union Street:  The project includes Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining of the sewer main in Union Street.  This work is scheduled to be completed in March 2025.
• Connections in Elmhaven Way, Midland Valley Way and Downing Glenn Drive:  Work on these 3 connections has been completed.
• Water Service Renewal in Maynard Road, Ann Street, and Heater Drive: All water service renewals in these areas have been completed.
• Boyd Street: Water and sewer main replacement in Boyd Street has been completed with the exception of CIPP lining.  CIPP lining is to be completed in March 2025 with the work in Union Street.

Future Water Main Replacement Areas

The next water main replacement project is in the early stages of design. The project areas include:

• Crabtree Crossings Parkway
• Hampton Pines Drive
• Shirley Drive
• Tanglewood Drive

An important first step in this project is to survey and take inventory of site conditions. This survey will provide Cary staff with the accurate and up-to-date information before developing a design plan that will minimize impacts to residents. Survey was collected in these areas by KCI Technologies. You may see paint markings on the ground showing the locations of underground utilities that were picked up during the survey phase.
