Proactively replacing water meters approaching the end of service life is one way Cary helps ensure the safety, reliability, and resilience of our water system infrastructure and service.

Meter replacement work is done routinely in several locations throughout Cary’s water service area which includes Cary, Morrisville, and Wake County’s portion of Research Triangle Park. This work occurs on a priority-basis for the oldest meters as well as corrective-basis for meters that have reached end of life and are not currently operating. The Aquastar program was initiated in 2011 with a town-wide installation of smart meters. Cary’s staff are monitoring the meter population and replacing aging and malfunctioning meters as quickly as possible.

Citizens will receive a door hanger after their meter has been replaced. For commercial, industrial, non-residential locations, additional coordination will occur. Replacement work is ongoing as part of Cary’s asset management and data-driven approach for water system infrastructure maintenance and repair.

If you have questions or concerns call 311 (within Cary limits) or 919-469-4000. You can also email 311@carync.gov.
