Meet CASSI!

In the spring of 2023, Cary partnered with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to bring an exciting demonstration in autonomous vehicle technology to Bond Park in the form of an all-electric, driverless shuttle pilot.

CASSI (Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation) ran a four-stop route from the Cary Senior Center to Bond Park Community Center.

Why CASSI?

From smarter water meters to advanced traffic management, Cary is always looking for the next technological advancement with potential to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Autonomous vehicle technology, while still in its early days, has exciting potential for future applications. By partnering with NCDOT to bring CASSI to Bond Park, we were able to get a sense of what autonomous vehicle technology can do in a safe, real-world setting while giving park visitors a close-up glimpse of this cutting-edge innovation. A similar shuttle had previously been piloted under the CASSI program at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Is there a driver?

While the shuttle uses cutting-edge technology to operate without a driver and does not feature a traditional steering wheel or manual brakes, a trained attendant will be present at all times to take manual control of the vehicle if needed to ensure the safety of the passengers. The attendant can also assist passengers using wheelchairs or mobility devices, answer questions, and provide information about the CASSI program.

What are the vehicle’s safety features?

The shuttle operates with numerous sensors continuously scanning its surroundings for obstacles. A trained attendant is on board to intervene should the vehicle need to be manually stopped or steered. The vehicle stops at all pedestrian crossings and intersections and does not exceed 12 mph when in motion.

How much does it cost to ride CASSI?

During this pilot deployment, there was no cost to ride the shuttle.

How many passengers can CASSI accommodate?

The shuttle can seat eight people and the attendant.

Is there an age limit to ride?

Passengers age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Will passengers be required to wear masks on the shuttle?

Masks are recommended but not required to ride the shuttle.

Is CASSI wheelchair-accessible?

Yes. The shuttle is equipped with an automatic wheelchair ramp and there are ramps where needed at the shuttle stops to support wheelchair ramp accessibility into the shuttle.

Why does CASSI travel so slowly?

Safety is always the top priority. Maximum speeds are limited by current technology, roadway configurations, and other factors. As technology improves, speed will as well.

Are dogs allowed on board?

Only approved service animals are permitted on the shuttle.
