Thinking about being a Team Manager? Check out the details below.
Why does Cary JTT need team managers?
Team managers are vital to our program's success! With an average of 50 JTT teams each season, team managers help our matches run smoothly and help create that team feeling among the players. Being a team manager can be quite rewarding. Check out the quotes from recent managers.
What experience or training is required?
Tennis experience is not required. You can learn on the job from the CTP Site Coordinator and other team managers.
USTA Safe PlayTM approval is required. This includes a training course and a background check. More information here.
How much time is expected of me?
A typical team manager spends about an hour emailing players about each match and another hour and a half at the match itself. You can spend more time if you choose to do extra activities with your team such as practices outside JTT. But that is up to you!
What do I do each week when we play a match?
Follow this timeline to ensure your players are set for the match that week.
- Monday/Tuesday - Email your team the match time and location from TennisLink and ask for RSVPs of who will attend.
- Wednesday/Thursday - Send a second email to those who have not responded.
- Friday - Send out final reminder to the team with the match time and location.
- Create a line-up based on the pre-made line-ups we sent you and substituting players for any absences. DO NOT EMAIL THIS TO YOUR TEAM. We expect all players to arrive at the designated match time. This is to ensure we have enough players if someone unexpectedly does not show or is late. Please be fair so all players have equivalent playing time based on their attendance.
Then on Match Day:
- Arrive 15 mins early.
- Get balls and score sheets from Site Coordinator (Cary staff).
- Have your players check in with you when they arrive. Circle or otherwise mark them as present on the score sheet.
- Identify the team manager for your opponent. Work with them to fill-in the line-ups on the score sheet.
- Send first round of players to courts to start warming up.
- When the match is completed, your player shall report the score to you. Please record the score on the score sheet and ensure agreement with the opponent's team manager or player.
- At the end of both matches, turn in the completed score sheet to the Site Coordinator.
What if I can’t make a match?
No problem. If you have been able to do the emails during the week and have a lineup prepared, you can send that to another team parent or drop it off at the match site.
If there is not a lineup on match day, the Site Coordinator will handle this for you.
What do I need to know about the score sheet?
You can preview a sample score sheet here. You can ask the Site Coordinator for help any time.
Each team manager will fill in their lineup at the beginning of the matches. One manager will then be responsible for adding the scores for each match and verifying with the other team manager and/or other team player.
Terms to know:
- Completed: Match was successfully completed within 45 minutes with one player or team winning 6 games or the tiebreak.
- Retired: One player had to stop playing during the match (e.g. injury). Opponent will be marked as the winner.
- Default: One player did not show up for the match; a player was late for their match or a player acts in an unsportsmanlike way. Opponent will be marked the winner.
- Double Default: Both opponents did not show up for the match.
- Timed Match: Match was not yet determined by the end of 45 minutes. Winner will be the player leading after 45 minutes.
Let’s not forget the exciting perks for team managers!
- You have the opportunity for your player to replace other teammates who aren't able to attend or don't show for a match.
- You will be offered 2 free tickets to the ACC Tournament in April each year. (Fall & Winter season managers)
- You will be offered 2 free tickets to the Cary Pro Tournament in August each year. (Spring & Summer season managers)
What do recent Team Managers say?
"I volunteered for the opportunity to get to know other families and help my daughter find playing partners outside of JTT."
"I like creating the team spirit with my players… helping them learn to support their teammates, cheer them on and be there when they are disappointed."
"I enjoy helping build friendships and camaraderie within our team by doing things like scheduling practice outside of the regular JTT times.”
