Unlock Your Coaching Potential in Cary!

Before you commit to coaching, we understand you need to know what you can expect, and what will be expected of you. Please see below for more details and requirements.

  • All new coaches meet one-on-one with their league programmer. In that meeting, you will talk in detail about the philosophies of our program, specifics of your league, and your own experiences in sports and as a coach.
  • We also conduct a league-wide coach meeting prior to each season, at which staff and coaches talk about league rules and other elements of the program and share ideas about how to improve the program and the coaching.
  • All head coaches are required to be certified with the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). Certification requires successful completion of a three-hour training course, and the Town pays for each new coach's membership in NAYS for up to three years.
  • We frequently schedule coach clinics in the weeks leading up to each season. Baseball and softball clinics are run by USA Baseball staff, and basketball clinics are run by former college coach George Freebersyser of Assist Basketball.
  • We often schedule player clinics that focus on particular skills (pitching clinics, for example), and invite coaches to attend to learn how to teach from the teachers.
  • All coaches have access to a variety of online resources, such as Assist Basketball (age 9-18 basketball)
  • Coaches in our program have unusual flexibility in setting their schedule. We ask all coaches what days of the week and times they prefer and are nearly always able to accommodate one of their top three choices. Further, most of our practice schedules contain extra time, which coaches can use to adjust their practice schedules or add additional practices.
  • No coaches, whether head or assistant, are required or expected to attend every game or practice. We understand that all of our volunteers have other commitments, and we make every effort to ensure that every team has a sufficient number of assistants. And under certain circumstances, coaches are able to pick their own assistants if they know anyone interested.

Thank you again for your interest. We hope you will decide to help your community by volunteering with a youth sports league. Please complete the coach interest form if you would like to be a youth coach. If you have any questions about the opportunity, please contact us at sports@carync.gov
