The Cary Police Department is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). Since the first CALEA Accreditation Award was granted, the program has become the primary method for an agency to voluntarily demonstrate their commitment to excellence in law enforcement. The standards upon which the Law Enforcement Accreditation Program is based reflect the current thinking and experience of law enforcement practitioners and researchers. Major law enforcement associations, leading educational and training institutions, governmental agencies and international law enforcement executives acknowledge CALEA's Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies and its Accreditation Programs as benchmarks for professional law enforcement agencies. 

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services. The Cary Police Department has been accredited since 1992. In addition to being re-accredited, the department has also earned CALEA's Accreditation with Excellence award. The intent of this award is to provide agencies an opportunity to be further recognized for the effective use of accreditation as a model for enhanced public safety service delivery.
