Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) Team
At the March 10, 2022 Council Meeting, CAP Representatives presented a check of $160,964.36 to Council as a representation of their volunteer hours over the past two years. Watch the remarks and presentation.
In the summer of 2000, the Cary Police Department formalized the CAP Team program after Citizen Police Academy graduates asked for a way to continue volunteering with the department. By 2017, the CAP Team has grown from 31 volunteers to approximately 170 members, and is one of three programs in North Carolina recognized by Volunteers in Police Service, a national initiative begun in 2002 as part of the USA Freedom Corps. CAP Team members provide a valuable service to the community by donating thousands of volunteer hours per year; providing assistance at public events, child safety seat installations, performing clerical duties and service center staffing, and promoting Community Watch programs.
For more information about the CAP Team and ways to get involved, please contact Sergeant Dustin Wright, 919-380-2129 or dustin.wright@carync.gov.
Citizen Police Academy
The Citizen Police Academy is designed to give Cary residents a close-up view of their Police Department. An extensive list of topics covers all aspects of Cary Police Department operations and organization.
This course of instruction has been designed to familiarize citizens with the administrative philosophy, internal policies, and guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services within our community and is taught by the officers, detectives, supervisors, and specialists who are the subject matter experts in each area.
The curriculum is a substantially shortened version of the basic training program presented to new police cadets as a part of their pre-service education and training. Although shortened, the curriculum retains the core elements of basic law enforcement training believed to be essential for citizens who wish to gain a better understanding of law enforcement and police operations.
This program will provide more than thirty hours of scheduled classroom instruction. The basic classroom hours are supplemented with participation in classroom exercises, live simulations, and ride-a-longs with officers on patrol.
For more information about the academy, please contact Sergeant Dustin Wright, 919-380-2129 or dustin.wright@carync.gov.
