Sensors and Gauges
Starting in 2021, Cary began installing stream sensors and rain gauges within its waterways. The sensors provide real-time stream elevation data while the rain gauges record rainfall accumulation and intensity. This data is used to develop and calibrate basin models to assist with stormwater planning and floodplain improvements as well as to send alerts. These IoT technology and data analysis projects are part of the Smart and Connected Cities Program that supports data-driven solutions intended to enhance the quality of life in Cary.
Visit our interactive stormwater dashboard for maps and real-time data from stream sensors and rain gauges. You can also view, download, or even subscribe to historical information using our stormwater dataset in Cary's Open Data Portal.

Goals and Uses
- Share real-time and historical stormwater stream elevation and rainfall data gathered through sensors and an IoT ecosystem with town staff, the State, regional partners, and the public.
- Support basin modeling initiative that forecasts potential stream dynamics based on rainfall.
- Provide stream flood monitoring and alerts locally and as part of the State's FIMAN (Flood Inundation Mapping and Alert Network).
