The Town of Cary owns and operates three State-of-the-Art water reclamation facilities. Recognized by the EPA for exceptional quality treatment, our facilities typically remove approximately three million pounds of nitrogen per year at removal rates of greater than 95%, using a natural biological nutrient removal process. In 2001, Cary became the first municipality in the state to provide Reclaimed Water to citizens and local community businesses through a regulated distribution program with the goals of beneficially reusing highly treated wastewater and further reducing nutrients in the Neuse River Basin.

In 2006, Cary began an innovative program for biosolids management, which constructed and began operating a thermal biosolids drying facility. The facility set Cary on a path to producing Class A, Exceptional Quality biosolids. The program also provided a way to beneficially reuse nutrients in the form of biosolids pellets. Our pellets provide a marketable and valuable nutrient-rich byproduct that can help to improve soil conditioning and provide a much-needed fertilizer for nutrient-deficient soils. In fact, the Town of Cary Utilities Department was recognized by the Water Environment Federation as the 2022 Utility of the Future award winner for the Beneficial Reuse of Biosolids.

The Town’s WRFs are in continuous operation, 24 hours per day, delivering exceptional quality treatment. Each Water Reclamation Facility is equipped with a state-certified laboratory dedicated to continuous performance monitoring and reporting. This data is summarized each year and available in our Annual Wastewater Report.

North Cary Water Reclamation Facility

In 2003, the North Cary WRF was a national finalist in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act Recognition Awards program in the Operations and Maintenance category. In 2012, the facility was awarded the NC AWWA/WEA Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award for the central region. In 2019, the facility was awarded the first Partnership for Clean Water’s Phase III Director’s award in the country by the AWWA as well as the Platinum NACWA award for outstanding wastewater treatment and regulatory compliance.

The North plant is a biological nutrient removal plant with filtration. After treatment, some water is piped to homes and businesses in the vicinity for reuse in irrigation, manufacturing processes and industrial cooling. Treatment capacity - 12 million gallons a day.
