The Cary Fire Department Office of the Fire Marshal manages a program of new construction, state-mandated inspections at commercial and multifamily occupancies, and issuance of construction and operational permits. 

Inspections Schedule

The following is the state-mandated inspection schedule per Section 106 of the N.C. Fire Prevention Code (IFC). This schedule outlines the frequency with which all commercial structures must be inspected.

Once every year: Hazardous, Institutional, High Rise, Assemblies, and Residential occupancies except one and two-family dwellings and only interior common areas of dwelling units of multifamily occupancies.

Once every two years: Industrial and Educational (except public schools, which are inspected twice per year).

Once every three years: Business, mercantile, storage, churches and synagogues.

Fire Permits

Per Section 105 of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code (IFC), the Cary Fire Department issues mandated fire permits. The fees associated with these permits may vary depending on the hazards present. The hazards and fees can be seen on the Fee Schedule, located within the annual budget.

Explosives, Blasting Agents, Fireworks, and Ammunition

To manufacture, possess, store, sell, transport, or use explosive materials within the Town of Cary jurisdiction is prohibited unless prior approval has been granted and a permit has been issued. You may obtain explosives permits for site development by appointment only. Contact the Town of Cary Fire Marshal Division at (919) 469-4351 to schedule. The fee for a 30-day explosive permit is $100.

Aboveground/Underground Tank Installation and Removal

Aboveground/underground tank installation and removal are prohibited within the jurisdiction of the Town of Cary unless prior approval has been granted and a permit has been issued. You may obtain tank installation and removal permits by appointment only. Contact the Cary Fire Department Office of the Fire Marshal at (919) 469-4351 to schedule. The permit fee is $100.

Fire Hydrant Flow Test

You may arrange for a fire hydrant flow test by contacting the Cary Fire Department Office of the Fire Marshal at (919) 469-4364 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The fee for the flow test is $250, and the test can typically be completed within three business days.
