Home MenuCary Tennis Park Expansion: Pickleball & Clubhouse
Current Status
Summer 2024 Update: The project has been identified as a potential bond project for the 2024 proposed bond referendum. For more information on the bond referendum visit carybonds.org
Background
Cary Tennis Park provides programming and open play for tennis and pickleball players of all ages and abilities. Since its opening in 2002, the Cary Tennis Park has grown to become a nationally recognized venue, hosting local, regional, and professional events that include ACC Tournaments, USTA Amateur, and Pro-Circuit play. The Cary Tennis Park recently hosted the PPA professional pickleball tournament.
Developing a plan to increase the quantity and diversity of court types including adding specific courts for pickleball was identified as an action important to the community in the 2012 Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Master Plan. The plan also identifies developing the Cary Tennis Park as the hub of tennis in Cary and expanding the existing clubhouse.
Overview
In fall 2021, Council approved funding to complete a study for the tennis park clubhouse project. The draft study and concept plan recommend replacement of the existing clubhouse and developing the Town-owned property to the south of the facility for the expansion of pickleball. The proposed Cary Tennis Park Pickleball and Expansion Project includes:
- Up to 30 pickleball courts on the undeveloped property to the south with pedestrian and vehicular pathways, support building and improvements within the existing park to facilitate this development. These courts would be designed for both everyday use as well as for the ability to host tournaments.
- Increased shade facilities for seating adjacent to the pickleball and tennis courts.
- A new two-story building, to replace the current clubhouse, that would include offices and multiuse space overlooking the facility for day-to-day operation and during events. The main level would provide public entry and access to the pro shop as well as the potential North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame. The lower level provides locker rooms, fitness areas and lounge space.
- Approximately 300 seats could be added to the existing stadium court.
- Expanded elevated seating at the northern courts to mirror existing elevated seating on the west side. Additionally, this would include a lift for accessibility, reconfiguration of stairs and a bridge for passing over the pedestrian walkway.
- Expanded parking including a structured parking deck and EV charging stations.
- Addition of solar system to the roof of the existing covered courts to offset electrical usage at the Cary Tennis Park.
- Relocation of sewer and electrical utilities and stormwater improvements
Project Schedule and Funding
If the 2024 bonds are approved, a project schedule of about 5-7 years will be finalized to include, as needed: master planning, design, bidding, construction, and opening.
