I make works of art and useful items from reclaimed wood. For example I make a wreath of leaves from 20 types of wood from around the world, many with historic significance. One piece comes from a cabin originally built by George Washington in 1747. My other items include American flags made from NC tobacco sticks over 100 years old. I also make serving trays, Christmas trees and many more. All items come with a description and history of the wood.

Watercolor paintings are painted on 140lb Strathmore paper with Winsor & Newton paints. I start with a high-light on a painting & pull my paint away. Once dry, I expand out and again pull paint away to layer and blend in a wet on wet process. My alcohol ink paintings are on yupo paper or ceramic tiles. Rubbing alcohol & brushes move the inks like my watercolors & can remove the paint to expose the surface below. The paint and water/alcohol interaction determines how the painting evolves.

Woven items are created on Rigid Heddle or floor loom. Applying photo sensitive dye to fabric, layering it with opaque objects and exposing to sun yields sun painted fabric/scarves. Eco printing uses a chemical reaction to encourage the tannin in leaves to imprint on silk after simmering in a water bath. Applying soapy water and friction to wool fibers forces them to adhere (felt) to themselves or other fabric. Shibori dying creates patterns through folding, tying, binding and ice dying.

@FeltedCreations.GSO
I create art and sculptures out of wool by needle felting. The wool is felted and shaped by stabbing the wool with special felting needles which have tiny barbs at the end causing the fibers to tangle and felt. I form everything from natural core wool and then add detail with dyed wools, there are no styrofoam bases in my work. I also have wet felted art (water and soap are added to wool then agitated with hands to create felted pieces) that have decorative needle felting designs on them.

I create feel good art with a message. The majority of my designs are painted or crafted digitally and all art pieces incorporate and begin with the message. Sometimes I use funny ideas, some romantic or some poetic. Into each design a famous quote or my own personal writings are added. Pieces are produced on all different mediums from art prints, canvas, wood prints, stationery and more after. I do paint some things originally by hand before digitizing them as well and sell original art too.

My work explores what common objects can mean to us. I make functional ceramics that tell stories and are infused with meaning by building collage works and layering multiple materials - vintage laces, embroidery, crochet, plants and flowers - on clay. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind artwork through its unique textures and impressions on the clay. I hand-paint all ceramics with stains, underglazes, slips and washes.

I use many different batik fabrics in many colors to produce beautiful bowls. I also make scalloped bowls by applying fabric to Temptex and I cut out some of the fabric and put it back together using a satin stitch on the sewing machine to make scallop shape.

I combine my illustrations, my paintings and my photographs to create one of a kind artwork. For example I will draw a picture, color it with color pencils, scan it to my computer and then pick several of my photos (flowers, sky, trees, water, sun photos) and overlay them on my drawing for additional depth and texture. With my photos, I will layer several of them together to achieve the look, mood and humor I'm striving towards.

I create hammered aluminum jewelry with stained glass and semiprecious stones which is lightweight and tarnish-free. Inspired by nature, many of my pieces feature botanical elements or whimsical sea creatures. Each piece begins with a simple strand of aluminum wire which is shaped and hammered to produce a strong finished piece. The process of hammering also allows me to give the piece a little extra dimension through variations in the width of the wire due to the force of the hammering.

Kettu Woodworks is based in Wake Forest, NC. All products are hand made, using wood obtained from local lumber yards and milled in my shop, finished with mineral oil, food safe epoxy, or my proprietary wood wax. My pieces are inspired by my experiences and those around me; my eldest daughter often serves as both muse and quality tester. My favorite part of the creative process is seeing the wood reveal its character as I mill it. Each piece comes to life through unique grain color and pattern.

I really appreciate the grain patterns in the different types of wood (hence "Grainy Days"). I strive to chose varieties that compliment each other when using multiple woods in one project. I love gluing the different woods together to make various shapes and patterns. If it's a cutting board, then that's pretty much it. If it's a box top, then I have to choose the wood that matches and the type of joinery to put it together. With so many types of ways to join wood it never gets boring!

I love to create landscape paintings that are abstract and impressionistic. I enjoy working with palette knife and oil paint for bold color and texture. The palette knife allows me to apply thick paint and retains the vibrancy of color. I begin my paintings with a reference photo and apply my first layer with in an acrylic medium on canvas. Using both brush and palette knife, I paint additional layers with oil, leaving some of the acrylic painting showing through.

Trained as both an architect and a metalsmith, I combine these two passions to create modern jewelry in steel. Each design is original, laser cut and then hand finished and hand cast with epoxy resin, or 18 karat gold plated. The forms are both architecturally based and drawn from nature.
